What’s most important is to have a clear conscience
Ivana Plíhalová, née Dufková, comes from Brno. She was born October 28, 1962. Her mother was a nurse and her father a journalist. He worked as a culture editor in the newspaper ‘Rovnost’ and was fired from his work and expelled from the Communist Party after the political screenings following the Warsaw Pact invasion of Czechoslovakia. He then worked as a sports editor of ‘Lidová demokracie’ and as an editor in chief of the editorial office of ‘Svobodné slovo’ in Brno following the year 1989. Ivana graduated from the Brno Conservatory. After graduation she got a contract in the former State Theatre of Oldřich Stibor in Olomouc. She married the famous folk singer Karel Plíhal, with whom she has two children. One of her family’s closest friends has been the singer-songwriter Jaromír Nohavica. Since February 1989 she collected signatures on the petition for the release of Václav Havel from prison and also distributed the ‘Několik vět’ petition. In November 1989 she was one of the organizers of the strike of theatre workers in Olomouc. She got involved in the Civic Forum and became a local representative for the Civic Forum as well as a president of the cultural committee after the 1990 election. She has had hundreds of parts in the Moravian Theatre Olomouc and has also cooperated with the Czech Radio. She was nominated for the Thalia Award for her role of Božena Němcová in the play ‘Dávno, dávno již tomu’.
