Emelina Núñez was born on October 27, 1947, in Cuba. Her parents were farmers who tried to help others, and they raised Emelina with the same values. Her father fought against the regime, and she helped him. She believed that by supporting and accompanying her father, she would protect him and nothing would happen to him. However, the opposite turned out to be true. Both were arrested. Emelina’s father was sentenced to 30 years in prison. At just 16 years old, Emelina was sentenced to 21 years in prison. Her brother was also imprisoned. While in prison, he suffered from health problems and died because no one provided him with medical help. For Emelina, experiencing this at such a young age was a major turning point in her life. She called prison a living hell and admitted that it ruined her entire life. Her father, too, was a different person after being released, as he had been through hell. After being released from prison, Emelina stayed in Cuba to take care of her aging parents. Later, she emigrated to Miami. Even after so many years, it is still very difficult for her to talk about what she went through in Cuba. Her fate was harsh, painful, and relentless. Despite everything, she still hopes that one day Cuba will be a free country and that communism will finally come to an end on the island.
